Aven Colony (PS4) Empty

Intro

I renewed my Game Stop card last week... two weeks ago? and while I was at the store, bought a couple games, one of which was (you guessed it) Aven Colony. As I'm typing this at work, I am unable to tell you what the back of it said, but it essentially went something like this:

Quote :
Build and operate a colony on an alien world, and micromanage the ever-loving shit out of it

Okay, maybe it didn't say things quite like that, put it made it sound to be a lot like Sim City. I love Sim City. As a matter of fact, I have the Playstation version downloaded onto my PS3. With that, I had to buy it; I've been looking for such a game for a long time.

Yes, I know some of you reading this subscribe to Steam, and that AC has been on Steam for a while now. From videos I've been watching, while the game is the same, the mechanics differ... darn those console controllers. Also, you can buy this game off of the PS Store for $29; the disc at Game Stop cost $25

As always with these kind of posts, I'm hoping for this to be a helpful and convenient place for advice or lessons learned. I am by no means an expert on Aven; I've only played a few days and ran two colonies (in addition to trying sandbox mode without knowing anything or without going through the tutorial), but I've made some mistakes and learned some things that may assist others. Shall we begin?

NANITES

This is your money; every build requires nanites, and there are some trades that require you to export this resource. I cannot stress this point enough: nanites are your single most important resource. You can grow your crops, collect your water, and produce your electricity... but you need nanites to build the farms, wells, and power stations. If you're low on a resource, you can always build another supplier... unless you don't have enough nanites.

There are two ways to gain nanites: through mining copper or iron (and then converting those minerals at a nanite converter), or by some method I haven't learned yet involving growing some sort of plant and then converting it into a sludge. I've only learned about the sludge method last night when I was trying to find ways to get more nanites.

There is a third option available to you, and that is to recycle buildings. You can either recycle buildings and collect a portion of the nanites back that went into its construction, or you can cause the building to implode. Your call.

When the mines run out... and they will run out, believe me on this... your source of material stops. No material, no nanites. You will be unable to build or repair anything ever again until you get some more nanites. Some missions will reward you with nanites, but those are never enough. You may also come across a supply pod that has some nanites; they may keep troubles at bay for a little while, but that's it, they only delay the inevitable.

...

I was (and still am) operating on the first colony world. V-something. My first colony was fine, but the logistics and layout weren't to my liking, so I deleted it. My second colony was amazing. Built every mega structure, had a population of over 1200 colonists, happiness was at Very Happy levels, full employment, no crime... and then my initial copper mine stopped producing. My automated repairs on the colony due to shard storms stopped; some structures became nonfunctional. There was growing unemployment, limited power outages... though the colony's happiness never went below Smile . I was still able to take care of some things, as the iron mine was pr-

The iron mine stopped.

Happiness bordered between Smile and Neutral . Unemployment continued to rise. And even though I couldn't do anything any more, I was still receiving (and having to turn away) immigrants. Started receiving messages stating that a building was about to collapse (so I recycled); then another one, and another. Man, those shard storms do some damage when you aren't able to do anything about them! Not only was unemployment continuing to rise, so to was crime. My utopia was falling before my eyes.

On a side note, I did win a fifth election at this point. I had massive amounts of food with a damn good variety; water was plentiful, air quality pretty good; but my city was on a steady decline, all for the lack of nanites. I eventually said fuck it and started to blow up the residential areas... colonists do not like being killed off, let me tell you.

So let this be a less for you: build in moderation, take things slowly. I may have succeeded if it wasn't for the construction of the mega structures (we're talking 420-900 nanites apiece here). Build what's needed when you need it, follow the missions and don't jump ahead. CONSERVE NANITES.

ELECTRICITY

In the lower left of the screen, you'll see your electricity meter: it has an icon of a lightning bolt, followed by two numbers. It took me a fail bit of time, more than I care to admit, BUT...

The numbers of the left is how much power is being used; on the right, how much is being produced. So, if it reads 345/298, you are using 345 while only producing 298. I had this backwards when I first started out. Couldn't even tell you why.

{EDIT}

I've destroyed another colony, though I think I'm only on colony three now, so it isn't too bad. And hey, with each destruction, I'm improving.

With this destruction, it was due to a failure in my power grid: the zorium mine dried up; in turn, this caused the four zorium generators I had running to shut down... and that, my friend, was a lot of lost power. This led to a cataclysmic domino effect across my colony, starting with lost jobs (no power to go to work), no water (no power to run pumps), than food shortages. I was able to turn things around and got things up and running again, and got things back to normal... but it taught a valuable lesson.

Do NOT overextend how many facilities are using a mine.

With my latest colony, I'm operating two geothermal generators and a lot or third tier solar panels. This is good right now (early game) in that panels don't require workers, but they are taking up space that could be better utilized. Don't know when I'll construct a zorium generator, but the ultimate goal is to create a transceiver and remote solar array, but that involves exploring the planet you're on, and I haven't gotten to that level yet.

Anyway, the point of this edit is be prepared for power failure, it will happen if you over extend yourself. Note too that solar panels will only produce 50% power in the winter.

Missions, Objectives, and Victory

On the first colony world after the tutorials, the victory mission is the creation of an Earth History Museum and to have it operational for one sol (one game year). I did this with my first world... but, it didn't count because I was not tasked with that mission. Didn't know at the time that building stuff early only rewards you when that objective comes up, that those objectives are on a timed script.

You can build stuff and get rewarded when the appropriate time comes, but no sooner. so keep that in mind!
