I didn't know if I should stick this under Elder Scrolls, but that was under general video gaming, and MODS fall under the umbrella of PC only. Not only that, but I'm not just talking about Morrowind or Oblivion mods, as I recently had the notion to check for Fallout 3 mods. I had this idea when reinstalling some of the old Oblivion mods, then posting pics of my newly modded Morrowind. I had hopes of laying down a step-by-step play-by-play of successfully installing mods for these Bethesda games, since certain mods become hell to install... but now I'm leaning towards instruction AND discussion, in case other potential modders out there have questions.

So, for starters, I'm going to say if you're interested in modding your games (only the above-mentioned games...or Bethesda RPGs in general), you need to become familiar with the Nexus. I'm not going to drop all the links...hell maybe I will.

http://www.tesnexus.com/ is the place to go for almost all of your Morrowind and Oblivion mod needs. Nice category system and a Top 100 Mods section.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/ is the same as above but for Fallout 3...imagine that. Same people, same exact site design, and as it turns out, registering at one site lets you into all of the Nexuses...er...Nexi? Yeah...anyway...

The rest I won't link as I don't have them bookmarked, so you'll just have to google it, but there are nexuses for Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas.

Anyway, my main focus now for this thread stems from my digging through the Fallout mod top 100 and making an observation. I'm going to say Oblivion top 100 'of all time' is probably 50% graphics tweaks and improvers, where it seems closer to 90% of the Fallout top 100 involve changing graphics, and this surprised me. I mean, I thought the graphics in Fallout 3 were pretty damn good, even compared to Oblivion. One of the reasons I got so excited about Oblivion mods was the game changing quests and oddities people were making, some of which I will be discussing in this thread...the graphics changes are nice, but those major game improvements really make mods worthwhile (IMO). So once I stepped out of the Fallout 3 top 100 and started digging through the categories, then I started finding the mods adding entire new towns with hundreds of new NPCs and scores of new quests...mods adding over 200 new weapons based on real-world guns but still fitting with game lore. New player homes, working vehicles, new mutants, rain and rainbows, chain swords, Space Marine power armor...oh yes...it's time to try Fallout 3 again. So, I'm going to discuss mods I'm using in any or all Bethesda games in this thread, and I welcome fellow gamers to discuss also!

Something to point out, the subject of the thread involving 'load order'...that references the mod managers made by modders for the sake of making sure mods work properly. One of the simplest uh-ohs that can screw up mods is having them load into the game's memory in the wrong order, and these mod managers make it simple and effective to change that load order. When looking for help on installing a certain mod or other in the forums, the helpers will often ask 'what's your load order look like?' Make sense? Oh, for a more specific example...if you have 2 mods, one that adds a new fish to a game, and the other gives the fish different behaviors and/or loot, which should load first? Exactly...altering the fishes behavior before the game even knows there's a new fish will be pointless, and will make the fish add-ons not work...perhaps even making the fish mod not work!

Now, on to my first trial by fire. Installing Fallout 3 (FO3). Most mods need the FO3 update patch to version 1.7. Okay, no problem. Until the patch doesn't work cuz it's not finding some damn 'xlive.dll'!!!! Google google google. Oh, it's for 'Microsoft Games for Windows LIVE'. Okay, I will just download that and install it. Done...run the patch...and everything goes to poot Microsoft Games for Windows LIVE needs to update. Okay, check for that...long story shorter...I now have Microsoft Games for Windows MARKETPLACE on my hard drive...and it logs me into XBOX.com using my brand new windows LIVE account. Frickin YAY!!!! I had the DLL, so why did I have to update? Cuz Games for Windows would not close/exit/shut down, or allow me to go in and disable 'run this when windows starts' until it updated...and after the update I still could not do those things until I made a windows LIVE account. But I had the DLL and I installed the FO3 patch, so now I can uninstall this stupid microsoft thing, right? I could....but I don't know if Fallout:New Vegas uses the same crap or not...so I will hold out. Word of warning though to anyone putting FO3 back on their PC...it will be a pain...

Now THAT, my wasteland friends, is pretty cool. Fallout mods... The 'Fellout' mod takes away the constant state of green glowiness on everything. I didn't think I would like it, cuz the post nuclear wasteland is supposed to look a little gassy and radioactive, right? Well, I'm impressed. Without that overbearing green fog, the world actually does seem even more empty and wastelandey, and increases view distances! Oh, and the Fellout mod does some tinkering with textures for the sky and clouds, improves the sun glare, amount of moon light, and makes nights DAMN darker. A couple of weather mods throw in some nice rain and snow, but the real point here is using Fellout with the two mods that turn on lights in the city and the wasteland "where you would expect there to still be power." In other words, they didn't overdo it. When you find a gas station that has a working soda machine, and that lights up, you would assume the whole place has power...so why is the soda machine the only thing working? Not anymore! There are now streetlights, signs, lighted windows...things of that nature. For added ambience, some of the lights flicker, some pulse slowly (and hum/buzz!!! heh...those who don't care about that would say "BAH! Hum/buzz!" Shocked )

Anyway, it just adds...totally awesome the way it works behind the scenes, but it just seems more interactive and suck-you-innish. I have a screenshot of some of the lights, from way the hell out and up on a hill. Just a few...just right...

Oh my...after going through all the screenshots, I have to wonder... should I install this lore-breaking mod into my Fallout 3? Very Happy http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14351

What mod is it? You should post a description of it, so that we may go oooo or awwww before we click on a link for the download.
