Okay, it's not often I find comics worth leaving lasting posts about. I suppose if I actually thought about it, I could have mentioned Garth Ennis's 'The Boys' from Dynamite Entertainment, as it is probably THE best written series I've read since Gaiman's Sandman.

Hell, I could even mention that IDW's 'Dungeons & Dragons' is highly entertaining, or that Boom Studio's 2011 Hellraiser series (written by Clive Barker himself) is awesome and true to how you would expect the Hellraiser franchise to continue (unlike some of the later films...)...

But LO! What's this?! IDW has released issue #1 of 'Magic: The Gathering'. Umm...heh...um... let's see. It's an actual story, following the exploits of one particular planeswalker (so far?), with art and writing similar in detail to IDW's D&D series... except the D&D series has writing that's just all around easier to follow. It doesn't help someone pay attention to the plot when the main character jumps between 3 (4? 5?) planes, and visits 3 (4? 5?) plot important locations, AND suffers 1 (and only 1) flashback (or was it a flash forward? He remembers it happening, but he didn't have the dagger last time it happened...and he JUST got the dagger, and that's what gave him the flashba...ARRGGHHH!!!! WAIT! Then he says he will be able to stop it from happening this time???? Suspect No Question ). I'm sure SOME of it would make more sense if the reader was more familiar with ALL the cards from the game, where I was unsure what certain creatures or weapons (that damn dagger) held in the way of importance.

I'm NOT going to say avoid this. It's worth a read, especially if you like the card game, or decent art with a multitude of well-drawn fantasy critters. Besides, in my experience IDW has a way of getting their shit together quickly. SO, I am going to recommend getting this, then holding your final judgement on issue 2 and maybe 3...see if any cohesion forms between anything presented in the first one...and hope that MAYBE the writer adds more than one sentence every other panel.

It has been a while since I've thought of posting in here. I have still be reading comics, MOST of them not worth a damn, and certainly not worth mentioning. I will still give kudos to the BOOM comics Hellraiser series, though it has started getting a little... out there?

Dynamite Entertainment's 'The Boys' is done. 72 issues plus some side mini stories. All in all, a damn good ride and a shame to see it end. So I give that series full kudos (ranks up there with Sandman in my book)

BUT, the latest thing I found was Dynamite's Voltron series! I just finished reading issue 9, and I have to say... well I should do a full explanation. The writing is merely okay, the art is just a smidge BELOW merely okay, but the STORY... because the writing is meh, it's not clear yet if this is a reboot (think Marvel movies), a side thing, a "this is how it really all began," or I don't know what it is yet. But the story works and is compelling enough to make me want more. I will say this, the primary focus is on Earth, and that's kind of where the whole thing starts. But they have thrown in some conspiracy shit, like maybe Planet Doom wasn' really the 'bad guys' and maybe Planet Arrus wasn't really the 'good guys' and Earth got stuck in he middle. So I'm giving kudos to a series with iffy writing and art coming from a whole new generation of Liefelds.

And on that note, I have another new thread tied in directly with this one... a panel in this Voltron series that I feel needs some explaining. Like, someone needs to tell me what the hell is going on in this panel! I explain in the thread located here: BAD art.
