| Good day, people! Computer question for you, one which I am looking into as well, but thought it be fun to post and inquire here as well.
We all have security needs, but we seldom have a security budget. I am looking into a way to help alleviate stress and worry, without having to resort to high expenses: web cam security. Honestly, there is no difference between a security camera and a web cam, with the exception of range... but if you are setting up in your own home, do you really need range?
So. Web cam security. There are two options here: wireless and wired. Wireless is nice, not as many cords to trip over and you are free to place the cameras wherever, but you are then dependent on the signal and strength of the router. Should your internet provider experience maintenance issues, or your phone company for that matter, there goes your system; cost would be slightly higher as well because of the equipment, and you'd have to find a router that can handle so many feeds. Go the wired route, and any money you save on a wired camera ill be going towards cables. You'll have to plan ahead your camera placement and buy cables accordingly. Also, you might want to see how many USB ports your computer can support.
Either way, it seems easy enough to set this up. However, what I am wondering is, is there a program or device that allows for multiple simultaneous web cam feeds? That would also allow for video recording of these multiple feeds? All the while utilizing the home computer, or even a laptop?

| Dammit, Jim! I was looking into this myself a couple years ago, and I actually found open source software that can run multiple views in real time (much like that used in a factory-type security shack) from a wired/wireless DVR setup, or even from multiple USB webcams.
Only problem with the software... I don't remember where I found it!!! Don't remember what it's called, how I found it, what one would search for... nothing! It was free and quite awesome, and I don't remember! Pretty sure there were a few of them... maybe a googling of 'open source security software'? I will do some digging as soon as I get a chance.

| Huh, that posted just fine, but for some reason my post that I want to post doesn't want to work. The links perhaps? Let's find out.
Here's the post without the links.
...
This may seem kinda confusing at first, unless you've read the Post Test messages.
...
This is the second time I've posted something this week and it didn't stay! Either that, or I hit "preview", read what I wrote, then go to the next website on my list... naah.
I did find a couple programs the other day. The first is called ISpy, and if I remember correctly, it saves your data off-site. The program is free as is the set-up, but there was a cost involved somewhere, just don't remember what.
The other one I found seems alright, but I'm sure there are others out there, better ones. I just haven't looked hard enough yet. This one allows you to watch and record multiple webcams that are hooked up to your computer.

| Okay, so there is an issue with the links. Problem with the links themselves, or with the page feature of making a link appear as a different word? First the links. The first is for ISpy, the second is for the second one I described. ... http://www.ispyconnect.com | |

| First link posted just fine, it's the second one that is causing all the fuss! What the heck? Here, let me try a bunch of things. http://multi-webcam-video-recorder-free.soft32After the 32, enter ".com" and that will take you to the download site. Or, go ahead and click on the link as is, and google is nice enough to provide a link complete with the .com already in place. | |
