Letter TO the Editor... Empty
PostSubject: Letter TO the Editor...   Letter TO the Editor... EmptyThu Sep 15, 2011 1:54 am

Dear XYZ Comic Book Company,

As much as this letter could be about how you've helped destroy the comic book industry with your overused plots, sticking the same characters in multiple story arcs within the same time frame, cooking up a multitude of alternate universes to explain mistakes made by your writing and editing staff, and so on, and so forth, it isn't. This letter is about your canceling of characters with a huge fan following because sales just aren't where they need to be.

In this day and age, with comics and regular books being replaced daily with digital formats, it's not surprising that sales are dwindling. It won't be much longer, all of your characters will fail to meet projected figures. What then? Cancel Superman? Batman? Spider-man? Wolverine? You've already tried rebooting almost every character or title in your catalog, so what's the next step? You don't have one. Comics are dying.

Without dropping names or companies, I will use an example. One of you had a character you kept bringing back in various titles as a guest. Due to popularity of the character, they got their own series. The sales weren't there, and they got canceled. More guest appearances, and the popularity grew. Bring in a new writer to breathe life into the character, and release a new series. Sales weren't there...canceled. More guest appearances, and a new writer lead to another new series. This is the fourth or fifth character redesign, and it works for a while. Sales aren't there, and you decide to cancel. Fans freak out, do a petition, and scream at you until you decide to keep the series and character due to popularity. A few months down the road, the sales aren't there. Cancel. Well, screw you too. We won't be buying your backstabbing crap.

Does it have to be this way? NO! Here's one problem: all the writers who come in to redesign your characters are already in the business. They have already been whipped into shape for whatever ultimate goal is set by your company. They are, basically, trained to follow the format. That's why the same characters keeps going around the same plots, with one or two opponents changed to hide the repetition. Dropping sales should prove the format sucks. In fact, independent comic companies are popping up like crazy, making a killing because they are NOT following the format, and the readers want that. You need some new blood that has NOT been tampered with already by your own "I've been doing this for umpteen years and I know..." because apparently you used to know, but have lost touch.

What do I suggest? Give the little guy a chance! I'm not talking artists. That's another story, and artists should have to stick to some kind of standard, though you've been letting that slide since the mass exodus of 1992. You may not realize this, but there are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people out there that have amazing story ideas for your old, dried-up characters, but they will never be known. Because YOU have set the bar too high for the process. "Oh, you don't know how to write a properly formatted script? You will not write comics." Well, screw you too.

How would you give the little guy a chance if he can't properly format a script? Use this new digital frontier. Don't hire the writer straight away, and don't have him/her write a title. Have them be email or chat room idea creators. Hold a contest for an idea to revive an old character, and let readers vote on the best idea. Have your full-time writer then engage in email and chat with this idea person. Idea person explains what the character needs to do, and how the plot should work, and the writer makes it happen for the artist. Include idea person in the credits. Unpaid. Release the book as a digital download 'value line' for low cost, and see how popular the idea is. If readers want more, consider hiring the idea person for low starting pay, and let them continue to do the work from their own location! While the idea person and the writer exchange ideas, the writer can begin the process of showing idea person the ropes. Let the writer train idea person in the writing technique, while allowing idea person to keep their own concepts untainted by your used up format.

New stories. New characters. New blood. Low cost, and possibly a chance to jump start a failing industry. Think about it...

Letter TO the Editor... Empty
PostSubject: Re: Letter TO the Editor...   Letter TO the Editor... EmptyThu Sep 15, 2011 12:54 pm

I'm a big comic book fan. Hell, I still have the comics I had when I was 12! That being said, I tend to agree with the majority of the initial post.

I do agree with the comic book company's need to reinvent a character, to make him more modern. Take, for example, the Marvel characters Iron Man and Punisher: these are, originally, two Vietnam War generation characters; both of them were involved in that conflict, and would be rather unlikely that someone, anyone (super powered or not) would be physically active to that extent while in their mid to late 60s. Some characters, such as Batman, are timeless in that they were not assigned a specific era or time frame, where their origin story isn't limited to a specific historically timed event, and as such, wouldn't really need to be re-invented.

However, I do disagree with a company's need to take a popular character and rehash them so many times over, just to meet current popularity trends or to match what's "hot". Could any example be greater than what has been done with Spider-Man over the years? Green Lantern during the 1990s?

Sure, a character that met with initial success might need a jump to see why the character has faltered, or to see what works with the readers, but that doesn't mean that needs to be done every time the character takes a dip (Marvel's Foolhunter). Even mainstay characters don't need to be revitalized just because the market doesn't meet the expectations. Superman's sales dropping? Write better stories, don't kill him for money's sake only to bring in four different versions!

As silly as it may sound, over use may be a factor in a character's demise. Look at the Punisher; in his prime, he held three monthly titles, numerous guest appearances in not only Marvel comics, but in comics belonging to different companies! The market became over saturated, the Punisher faltered and lessened, which led to a cancellation; "recently" (as far as comics go) the Punisher has come back, but with each story arc, writers are adding their own spin on things, ignoring what came previously. This may not be terrible right now, but things will catch up. Oh, let's not forget all the monthly's dealing with Batman and Wolverine... how soon before continuity comes crashing down?

The writers are nuts. Sure, everyone wants to put their stamp on things and get them accepted as canon, but come on. Do any of you realize how many times the likes of Thanos and Magneto have been redone simply to stroke the egos of the talents behind those books at that times? My gawd, man!

It also amazes me when a company does something"earth shattering" with lasting repercussions, in an attempt to fix their mistakes... only to go back to the same faults time and time again. Case in point, DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths or whatever it was. Worlds and characters were destroyed, other characters were combined, in an effort to fix all the continuity. What happened then? Writers missed the dead characters, brought some back because they "survived in a pocket world that didn't exist" or some crap like that. Got to the point where DC had to fix things all over again with Zero Hour. Marvel tried fixing things on a smaller scale, but made one big notable splash with, I believe, Thanos' limited series The End; that should have fixed things... but it didn't. Hell, The End is now explained in a way that doesn't even match what had occurred!

There are many great writers out there. In my opinion what they need to do is put their egos aside and write stories, not view points or renditions. If a character bible isn't in use, make one and adhere to it! (for those who don't know, a character bible describes the character, his drives and motives, personality traits, how, they'll react to situations, etcetera... essentially a profile of the character).

Stop giving me a single character appearing 20 times in one month in stories that are not connected to one another, or things that wouldn't even be possibly happening. Explain to me how can Wolverine be fighting Venom in Canada while teaming up with Punisher and the Avengers (different issues) whiloe teaming up with his X Men against Magneto while also, somehow, being on an asteroid plunging into the sun?

Stick to the bible. Stick to continuity.

Letter TO the Editor... Empty
PostSubject: Re: Letter TO the Editor...   Letter TO the Editor... EmptyThu Sep 15, 2011 1:57 pm

God damn it, I hate hitting backspace to only have the freaking web page go back, and not my cursor. I had more to add, and just lost the whole damned thing!

In a nutshell...

1. I like stories like What If and Elseworlds, just as long as they remain possibilities and never bleed into the main storylines... unlike Age of Apocalypse which introduced Dark Beast, Sugar Man, and X Man; how the hell can they exist, especially considering their whole entire line of existence was wiped out? They only existed because of an anomaly, an anomaly which was corrected!

2. I do enjoy sideline universes like the Ultimates. Again, just as long as they don't bleed over (no Samuel Jackson Nick Fury ordering the Avengers, stuff like that).

For the incompetent writers out there...

1. Stop using damned clones. Over done, every company has used them, several times! If you screwed up, figure it out, don't resort to clones! Punisher killed (a clone of) Nick Fury. Al Simmons committed suicide (let's clone him). Killed Superman (clone him).

2. Stop using the excuse of mind control, alien influences, spiritual possession. Puh-leeze. You screwed up. Don't take a good character and make him into something he's not. You screwed up, deal with it, try to work it out within the confines of the character bible.

...

Clone issues...

Someone want to explain to me how the hell you clone Superman? You can't cut him, not even his funky cape because of his funky aura... how you gonna break down the very cellular structure which makes him up?

Wolverine's cellular structure is always changing... how do you clone something that isn't remaining constant? (ie, Weapon X, Wade Wilson healing factor).

How can you tell if you are the real you? You have your memories, you know you are you... and yet, Peter Parker was somehow convinced he really wasn't himself (but a clone) and his clone (Ben Reilly) was convinced he really was Peter Parker, but then they both were convinced that they were really themselves, which is great because all the other clones were coming out of the wood work proclaiming they were really Peter Parker, and (warning: poster's head exploded while trying to figure this out. replacement soothsayer has been ordered)

I am WAY out of touch with my DC universe, but when Doomsday kicked Superman's ass, didn't Superman wind up bleeding all over the place during the fight? If I remember correctly, every time Doomsday hit Super, he would go sailing, smash into something, and bleed profusely...maybe I'm seeing somebody else in a red cape with tons of blood coming from nose and mouth... Anyway, that would work. As every comic reader knows, any time somebody bleeds, three years down the road when sales start dropping we find out mystery reporter 'X' was walking by that day and soaked up some super blood in their hot dog bun, because "never know when this might come in handy..."

OOH! AND....in the last real run of the Manhunter series for DC, it was explained that one of the super groups (JLA perhaps? Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, um...the Green Hawkeye) had a file on every super-person's DNA because of their Civil War series...er...well, when the government went after the supers because they should be registered (wow...am I really talking about DC here?). Anyway, in one issue of Manhunter, they took blood from some super or other (Blue Beetle?) so Batman could run it against the computer to find a match. TECHNICALLY, if Superman wanted to conform and allow himself to be sampled to set his high-n-mighty example, he could pull his own blood, swab his own cheek, spit in a cup...ETC. OR...when he's all weakened by Kryptonite, does he lose some of his defensive abilities? With how many times Lex Luthor has had Superman wrapped in chains and Kryptonite, a henchman or someone MUST have grabbed a sample...because "never know when this might come in handy..."

In a manga, Wolverine would have changed into a woman by now...with both sets of 'parts'....
Idea Idea Idea
BUT...right there, you have something that is NOT a repeat offender in western comics! Yeah, try selling that to the American masses. "Yes, kids! Due to a little gamma radiation affecting the cocktail of mutated wonder that is Wolverine's blood, our hero has mutated overnight into a woman!" Yep...then try to explain why this female wolverine would be a better read than that 2-clawed version in whatever X-book she's in...HA!

For DNA analysis, the cell's structure is broken down into its components so it can be analyzed. Yes, Superman bled, but how did the scientists at S.T.A.R. Labs (I am such a geek) break down the blood cells?

Anywho... don't forget that characters in comics never die, even those who have been dead for 50 years (I'm looking at you, Bucky). Nothing is ever permanent, even when it comes to Spidey.

Sure, he unmasks himself, goes public, turns back to the black uniform when his family gets killed, makes a deal with Maniphisto (or whoever that devil guy is) and makes a deal so that the entire past year never happened. But it did happen, because the Initiative and Avengers Acandemy are still putting out books! Maybe it was just Spidey's story that never happened? But if that was the case, then the Civil War storyline is askew because his going public was a major turning point for the heroes; if it never happened, then Civil War itself was altered, ans then (replacement soothsayer's head has exploded. we now go to soothsayer version 2.0)

Dear Marvel... what the hell are you doing?
Part 219

Remember this character?

Letter TO the Editor... 93121710

No? How about now?

Letter TO the Editor... Angela10

You see, Marvel has revealed a "new" character, one that, to quote...

Quote :
She’s one of the biggest new characters to debut in the Marvel Universe in over 20 years, and today Marvel is proud to unveil your first look at Angela, redesigned by Marvel Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer and superstar artist Joe Quesada!

Funny thing is, this isn't a new character. And, painfully, there hasn't been much "redesigning" going on either! This is Angela, a spawn hunting angel from the pages of Spawn, an Image book. Seems that Marvel is sucking so bad for good characters, or at least "new" ones that they are willing to do anything.

Now, some might be saying that Neil Gaiman owns Angela (after all, he designed and created her), which is true. Todd McFarlane has even said as much here. But seriously? C'mon now!

Marvel is naturally happy about this, and are set to make Angela into a major player... having her save the Marvel Universe in Age of Ultron, and then bringing her into Guardians of the Galaxy. What? WHAT?!

http://marvel.com/news/story/20615/behold_the_all-new_angela_by_joe_quesada

...

This is almost as bad as this little thing going on between Hercules and Wolverine...

Dear DC

There is nothing that the Main Man can't handle. NOTHING. Easter Bunny? Killed 'em. Santa Claus? Killed 'em. Gawd? Killed 'em. Dave? Killed 'em. Superman? Beats 'em up for fun.

And so on and so forth. He can't die, God don't want 'im and Hell is afraid. His body parts regenerate into entirely new beings (unless they've done away with that ability). He's the meanest son of a bitch on this side of the fraggin' universe!

Lobo was designed and developed to be the ultimate parody of the dark and gritty heroes that plague comic books. He is meant to be big and brawny and tough and over the top. That's who Lobo is, that's why people like Lobo.

So why DC, why oh dear gawd why would you change him to... to this?

Letter TO the Editor... 13772810

Don't believe me? Here's a link to the article!

Quote :
"My goal for him was to make him less comically hyper-masculine and more focused. He's still vicious, still savage and still entirely immoral, but I wanted a gravity out of the character. When he showed up, I didn't want him walking away from explosions and smoking a cigar. When he shows up, I want people to feel like, 'This is it. This is the end.'"
Less masculine? He's the alpha alpha male! More focused? He never backs down and will track his prey across the known (and unknown) universe until the prey is dead... how is that unfocused? And of course, anyone who Lobo has come into contact before has never EVER once thought that they weren't going to get fragged, by fetal's gizz!

PostSubject: Re: Letter TO the Editor...   Letter TO the Editor... EmptyTue Sep 03, 2013 2:58 pm

Dear Marvel-

I have been a long time fan of Thanos, a character whom you have used time and again to "change the Marvel Universe forever!" He gains ultimate power, loses it, only to find and gain even more ultimate power. Hey, as long as I have your attention, how many sources of ultimate power is there in Marvel anyway? Seems to be a lot, and it always seems as if there's an ultimate power more powerful than the ultimate power.

Anyway, I recall a few years ago you publishing a limited series called The End. Within this series, a character (I don't recall if it was Doom or Thanos) recognized the fact that heroes and villains come back to life, even after having been dead for years or decades, and all the other heroes or villains treat this as normal... that death has no meaning, and that somehow the universe was flawed.

Heck, even says as much on the wiki page Marvel: The End. However, if one were to go to the official Marvel wiki, they would be hard pressed to find this gem of a story: there is no event listing for The End. I suppose one could argue that since Thanos absorbed the entirety of reality (minus that one pocket dimension that Warlock was hiding in. go figure) and then set things back in motion, he in essence made sure that the End never truly happened (and as such, no event listing).

BUT, if you read the Thanos entry, it talks about this event. Here, read the paragraph:

Quote :
Following these events, there appeared the powerful Ankhenaten, an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who sought out the mystical object known as the Heart of the Universe, from which all energy physical and metaphysical emanates, and thereby gained infinite power. Several heroes tried to stop Ankhenaten's rampage, and the conflict gathered Thanos, Galactus, and other cosmic beings as well. Through a mixture of guile and power, Thanos stole the Heart of the Universe, merging with it to make himself like unto a god. First defeating Ankhenaten in ancient Egypt, Thanos remade the universe as if Ankhenaten never appeared, although Thanos remained omnipotent. A cabal of cosmic beings of power, such as Eternity and the Living Tribunal prompted an assembly of nearly every super-being, god, and cosmic entity (such as Galactus and the Celestials) help take Thanos down. Dismissing them all, Thanos proved to be too powerful. He could even kill a Celestial with but a glance! Thanos decided that the true sign of his ultimate power would be to destroy the universe and become the one true supreme being. However, after doing so, he realized that this role was ultimately hollow, fulfilling and empty, not to mention unnatural. He subsequently undid the destruction of the universe and obliterated the Heart from existence. Thus, not only did he strip himself of power, but he made the entire series of events null and void.
Notice something? The entry on Marvel's page is completely different then that of Wiki! And, the official version presented here does not match up with the story itself!

Oh Marvel... I can see why you have so many problems with your story lines: you don't have any researchers, and the ones you do have have either not read the source material, or are using false information. Here we had a great story, one that was supposed to do what DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths and Zero Hour and, well alright, DC tried to fix their problems half a dozen times and it hasn't worked yet. But here we had a way for you to set things right! How could you mess that up! And then to have different accounts of the same event... shameful.

Dear Creators of Anime-

I just read an interesting article that was posted on my Facebook page by FUNimation.  Please tell me why you feel the need to create an anime to be aired as a series, then feel the need to alter the visuals for a television movie format (not to mention more changes depending on what channel it is on), and then make a third version for DVD / Blue Ray release?  Granted, a lot of these alterations are minor and go un-noticed, but enough already!

My only consolation is that Lucas has never made an anime...  I can just imagine the amount of changes he would make.

Dear Editors-

In these times where it seems everyone is suffering from butthurt, and those who aren't are racist bigots who enjoy suppressing people, beliefs, and anything that goes against what they claim to be right, I can see why you, the editors and creators and powers that be have decided to cram every single minority into everything. You want to look as if you're on the little guy's side. You want to show the world that you support this movement or that movement, this group of people or them over there. But really? Seriously? Must you change everything and blatantly force the general population to watch, participate in, or feign acceptance of everything just so others don't get their feelings hurt or feel as if nobody likes them?

I'm sorry, Editors. I may have gone a little over with that one. Allow me to start over.

Why have you decided to make Iceman gay? And not the current modern Iceman... you know, the one that would make sense. No, you had to make the teenage Iceman gay. Even though the adult Iceman, as far as we all know and have read, is straight.

For those who aren't following this, it seems that the teenage X Men have been displaced, and have been working with their adult counterparts for some time now. Thank the gods that Marvel is erasing everything and starting over from square one.

Please please please, stop already. We escape to comic books and movies and the like to get away from the world, from all the bullshit and hype. We don't need or want real-life encroaching into our fantasy world. I mean sure, it's fine to have a character who has been this or that or the other thing from the start, but to take an established character and change everything just so you can say "Look! We support you!"? That's just the lowest form of pandering.

I am attaching a link to this post.  Please read the post first and then come back to read my comments, and see if they match yours.  Or read mine first, and imagine my shouting them out as you read the article.  Whatever, I don't care.

http://marvel.com/news/comics/25115/amadeus_cho_becomes_the_totally_awesome_hulk

1.  "revels in the newfound power and abilities"  Wow.  Like that hasn't happened before with any other Hulk being.  Very original.

2.  "At the time, there were a pretty good number of Asian characters from Asia in American super hero comics, but surprisingly few specifically Asian-American characters. I thought there was a niche there"  Wait, what?  There's plenty of Asian characters, but hardly any Asian Americans?  Oh dear Jesus.  Plenty of German and Slavic characters too, but you don't see the find folks of Liechenstein complaining, do you?  Not enough Asian Americans... what the fuck is that?

3.  “There’s a New Hulk—and he’s Totally Awesome!"  Gnarly, dude.  Like, totally so worth it, you know?  Like, do we reahlly need to, like, make the Hulk young and hype and stuff? to bring in younger readers?

4.  Now read the comments to the article... idiots claiming that the people being upset that all the changes being made to the pre existing characters are racist bigots?  Really?  Get off of it... There is no need to make Spider-Man a black kid simply to have a new black character... make a black character.  Making Thor a woman?  And it isn't even Thor?  Sure, Thor was a frog before, and Loki was other things before, and and and, but they were still the same person.  Make Iceman gay because trans pans GBTVLMNOP is trending now?  Like there hasn't been gay characters already?  Want a new character, make a new character.  It isn't hard... but then to have others worried that the powers would be the same?  Oh no, we could never have two characters with the same powers!

I'm kind of glad I don't buy comic books anymore.  Graphic novels, sure.  A storyarc's collection, yeah.  But everything else?  Pfft.

How did Amadeus Cho become the new Hulk, and what happened to Banner? "Buy the books and find out!" ???!!!??!?!??!?!??!??!?!? That's morse for "The fuck you say!"

Okay... I get that there were a number of Asian characters from Asia, cuz I'm not an illiterate retard, like the creator of this new Hulk who said exactly that. Asian characters from Asia... what the fuck has happened to comics these days?! So Cho, the creator, creates a character that's specifically Asian-American, and names him Amadeus (?????) Cho???? Because... oh let's pick this shit apart here... he's one of the (was it?) 8 most intelligent people on the planet, and Asians are all smart, right? But he's American, and a genius, so better name him after Mozart, cuz he was a genius, and American, right? Or was Mozart Korean? Cuz nothing screams "I'm a Korean American!" like the name Amadeus. Cho... created by Cho... this doesn't have a damn thing to do with anything except this writer/creator kid either having no original thought in his head, or having Liefeld Syndrome... knowing that he's so good he just has to smile, write in a pouch, and fuck physics and feet. Aww shit... skimming back, the artist is Frank Cho, my bad... I guess I was way off saying the character being named Cho was a case of ego.

So, what happened to Banner? It's been what, 70 years? His character has been raped and reraped so many times to keep him fresh, his movies have been rebooted with a new spin on Banner how many times, the Hulk's been twisted so many times to keep people guessing.... by this point, who gives a shit?! Gray Hulk? That was okay... let's just toy with this idea. Red Hulk? Marvel, ya'll crossed a line. Civil War... World War Hulk... at what point did the Hulk become a more interesting plot pivot than one man's struggle with his inner demons? I thought it was supposed to be a modern, sci-fi take on Jekyll and Hyde... and that fight between the light and dark in all people, especially when the dark can take over mentally and physically. Now, we have a big portion of a generation knowing all about the Hulk, but mention Banner and it's all "Who?" Backstory... hell coherent story, don't mean squat.

Norrin Radd? Who dat? Frank Castle? Is that like a sand castle made of wieners? (coincidentally still a better plot than most Punisher books... BURN!!! Razz) Heywood Jablowme? No, really Marvel... would ya? You know, Hollywood budgets and ratings I can get, but when you have to reboot characters that are still running, you have a fucking problem!!!! I would recommend you guys bring Thanos in to clean the entire catalog, but you already fucked that up once. Dear Marvel, you have lost the ability to tell stories. You suck. I hate to say it, but at this point, I think Liefeld may the only one who can save your wretched plots...

Did you know that Captain America was a secret Hydra agent this entire time?  Afraid so...

Hey guys!  In yet another effort to show that Marvel Comics is all about diversity, we're getting not just a black person as Iron Man, but female as well!

This is simply amazing.  I am so glad that Marvel recognizes that we need a black person as Iron Man (wait... wasn't Rodney once Iron Man before becoming War Machine?  oh well).  Or that a woman as Iron Man would be of importance (wait... I swear Pepper Potts has her own Iron Man outfit).

...

*sigh*  Even when they're trying to be original in their push towards diversity, it seems they're not being original at all.

Meanwhile, Marvel's pre-existing Hulk, the youthful Amadeus Cho, will continue as The Totally Awesome Hulk, meaning we now have two Hulks: One who's Korean-American, and the other who's a woman. Which is actually a pretty important step in the direction of actual diversity, and perhaps a genuine sign of progress.

Holy fuckin' gawd n chrissalmighty, that last sentence... comic books aren't diverse? Hasn't the author of this article ever heard of the X Men, and what they represented? Does having an American of mixed heritage really bring diversity, when every single damned American is from a mixed heritage? How does having a female version of a character who has existed for freakin' decades (both the female version and the original character) make this a sign of progress? What of all the other characters of differing nationalities, male and female, that the comic book industry has given us, does all that history mean nothing?

Idiots should not be allowed to write about things they have no understanding of.
