PostSubject: Video Section   Video Section EmptySun Dec 23, 2012 4:30 am

As part of the ongoing streamlining and organization of topics, I noticed a trend forming around TV, Movies, and Netflix. TV and Movies, which were their own forums, fit under the category of 'video', and that seemed a good way to organize them, but instead of a category I made video it's own forum, capable of taking posts like this one. I'm thinking this forum would be a good place to discuss anything video, from Youtube shorts to home theater equipment.

The problem is Netflix. If you search the forum for 'netflix', you will find a thread in movies, TV, AND computer chat. This makes perfect sense, as Netflix is a wild card for video viewing, and does handle TV and movies. However, we also have some threads devoted to Hulu, one or two now handling CrunchyRoll, and I will be adding to that with a thread for Crackle.

My original idea was to create a Netflix subforum to go alongside the TV and Movies subforums, and move all Netflix threads there. However, as more streaming services are discovered and utilized, we would then be obligated to create subforums for those, though all of them perform the same video service. SO....

Right now I'm thinking move the generic threads about the services themselves here, and leave threads discussing specific shows/movies in the TV and Movies subforums. Maybe rename those netflix threads to be more all-encompassing, like "TV shows we found on Netflix", then put a sticky post in explaining if you found a show/movie on Netflix, post a brief about it in that thread and explain why you like it. Then if the find needs further discussion fire up a separate thread for it? Hell, those "show/movie we found on..." threads could be made sticky also, and then similar threads could be made for the other services as well.

I don't know. I'm looking for input. TV and movies is fine, but Netflix throws a wrench in it all... as does the other streaming services. But I don't want a Netflix subforum because the same problem would present itself. One of us would mention a movie in the netflix subforum, and suddenly there would be a post about the same movie in the movies thread. And I understand how Netflix can go under computers, but it's also X360, WII, PS3, Roku, some TVs and cable boxes (oh and Android/iOS!!!).... and it's purpose is the delivery of video. Follow? If it's all about video, let's stick it in video!

Know what? I say we're all big boys and girls here. Just combine everything that relates as movies / television into one simple forum. As you said, there is no real distinction between online streaming, television, and video anymore; people are still more than welcome to post whatever / create a thread on whatever, but it would all be within this one category. Adding distinction only brings about more hassle; look at the number of times you and I, within an opening post,m would say "I'm not sure which forum to put this under..."

Within that sigle category, we could make individual threads entitled "Recommendations" (can't single Netflix Recommendations because the same movie is ll over) and "Reviews" (I'm looking at the topics such as Hobo with a Shotgun and the supernatural private detective movie whose name escaped me). That's pretty much it, that's all we've really done with videos, recommend and review.

Do away with Television, put it in the Video forum. Anything on TV can be seen on any streaming provider, or a little searching can find it on another website, or the broadcast station is playing it on the web anyway.

Yep. Make one full Video forum, broken into two categories of Recommendations and Reviews. Really, do we need anything else?

Dylan Dog!!

So then with the changes made, Crackle would go under TV like NetFlix? But wait, NetFlix is also under movies.. Hrmmm.. Still a work in progress!

No no no... my impulse is to move all Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, CrunchyRoll, etc posts here into this video forum. Here we could discuss all methods of visual delivery (those listed, blue ray, 3D, ETC...) and the finer points of using them on various platforms (PS3, X360, Droid, ETC...), any problems we have with said services, and basically rate and review the delivery 'systems'. This would also be the place for a collection of recent show/movie finds on those services, and why we like said show/movie, just to let others know if they might wanna watch or not.

I have been thinking hard about Sooth's post, and looking at what we have so far inside the TV and Movies subforums, and up till Netflix we've done a damn fine job of keeping everything well organized. I personally like the TV and Movie subforums, as it does give that bit of separation in case someone wants something to watch and they're all "I think I wanna try a show instead of a movie", and they don't have to wade through a gajillion mixed posts.

What I'm thinking is moving the aforementioned posts here, and then leaving it alone for a bit to get the vibe and see how it looks to everyone. If it's then too confusing or too something, I will combine everything. You know, you don't just make a Large Hadron Collider and say "Let's smash some shit at light speed!" You do a low speed test, take baby steps, ensure safety protocols... if we just starting smashing forums at light speed, we could cause a big bang and wipe out the internet! affraid
