PostSubject: How to?   Sat Dec 29, 2012 8:33 am

In light of the recent discussions on music making software and game soundtracks, I wanted to pose a question, probably directly at Vader.

So, I put a disc in my PS3 and flip over to it, and before starting the game I have some stuff to do, so the screen changes to the game background and the PS3 starts playing this music:

I LIKE IT! So of course, I want to try doing some of the instrumentation in LMMS. I play and I tweak and I putz, and it just won't sound right!!! No Listening to it on my phone, eyes closed and just absorbing, I finally realize what I'm missing. At roughly 10 1/2 seconds, they kick in some strings, which I was trying to replicate using string presets in LMMS, but as you can plainly hear the strings are doing a sort of 'up-down' thing like you would achieve going back and forth with a bow (cello or violin?). Obviously, my lack of music knowledge isn't helpful here, but you know what I'm saying.

So, with real instrument in hand, doing that wouldn't be too terribly difficult (if you knew what you were doing). But to make that happen in a digital audio software? Any ideas? I'm going to look into VSTs and see if there's a string setup where you can program a "backswing" (???), but otherwise... I mean, you can hear the 'attack' on the second pass is almost nonexistent, but there's full volume, almost like a note echo. Nevermind, you know what I'm trying to say, so how do I do it?!

Ok.... first off, the push motion and the pull motion on a stringed instrument will produce the same tone whereas if you were playing a harmonica, the inhale and exhale would be different...

I'm working on replicating the tone which you pointed out, (nice tune by the way!!!) and so far, this is what I came up with. I do want to add though that the sound which I was making while recording, (not ME but the keyboard notes) is close to what you wanted... ish
