Is it worth getting uber pissed about rumors? Fox news ticker on the break room computer says "Game over for Playstation" so I google for "Playstation news." Of course, just like every other news source out there, they gave just enough headline to make one wonder, but the actual article explains that Sony is stopping all future activity on the PS2... not a big deal. It had it's run, a good run, I'm okay with the news.

But then google is dropping "playstation news" about rumors of the PS4. I read an article which raises anger, and a bit of questions. I want to discuss one little section for now. Copy/paste:
More rumours suggest that Sony is going in the same direction as
Microsoft in that it wants to kill off the second hand games market.
Current industry wisdom suggests that future PS4 games might be tied to
your Sony Entertainment Network account and will thus then have no
resale value. That's a similar approach as used by PC developers using
Steam so we reckon this is a likely development. Doesn't mean we're
happy about it, though.

So aside from the initital Evil or Very Mad that comes from the above (especially with this passage being right after bad news about backwards compatibility), I'm wondering what they mean with "the same direction as Microsoft..." I mean, there's a staggering amount of used X360 games floating around the second hand markets, so what's the deal with this comment?

Okay I got some of the gist of it from the comments after the article. I have no idea who James Rivington is, but it's a TechRadar article, but still rumor... anyway, here's the link for the full thing to get your rumor anger raised slightly: grrrrrr

Good gravy. I didn't want to just stop at that article of rumor, so I googled specifically for 'ps4 news'. Where the previous article gives us various "sources" stating the PS4 will release anywhere between the Christmas season of this year all the way to fall of next year, Luke Johnson of 'Trusted Reviews' tells us his sources are releasing the PS4 between spring and fall of 2014, AFTER the Christmas 2013 launch of the X720.

Based on that much bullshit between only two articles, I would be willing to bet at least half of what was explained is, in fact, total bullshit.

Sony is losing money and could use the cash injection a new console would bring? No shit! They're all losing money! It's called a frickin recession!!! Chances are good a new console would be running $500-600 right about now (that first article did hint about Sony working with Google on something Androidish), and MAYBE people aren't ready to drop that kind of cash to save Sony right now!

If that's the kind of journalism required to write a tech blog, why the hell aren't we doing the same thing?! "A source I cannot reveal has informed me that Sony has turned to the Yakuza for help in guarding trade secrets concerning the Playstation 4 system, which my source says will be ready to ship in 2024. With the future Yakuza holding total control over time travel systems, they will be sending Playstation 4 systems back through time to somewhere between now and 2016! Further, my source has revealed that in 2018, the Cell processor will be replaced by a new chip Yakuza scientists devise using dragon's blood and Unicorn horn. This means by the time they ship the PS4 in 2024, they will already have 6 years of testing done on these new chipsets, so when they release before 2016, it should make for the ultimate gaming experience!"

Copy/paste: "That's according to tech site SemiAccurate,
which also claims to have heard from Japanese speaking sources that
Sony's next-gen console project is codenamed Thebes, rather than the previously rumored Orbis."

OMG... does ANYBODY care what the frickin project codename is?!

First off, I agree! Who cares what the codename is?!?!?!? Face Slap

Secondly, as eager as we all are to hear news of the the new next gen consoles, I for one will not believe any rumors until said consoles are out on the store shelves!

I will however start dreading the cost which is yet unknown! Thumbs Down

I'd put the cost at around $600. Seeing as how the PS2 was $300 and the PS3 $500 when they came out, I don't think my guess is far off, especially considering all the prototypes and stuff they've been developing. For instance, the Playstation Pulse. Granted, this is just a concept, but it is rather interesting... perhaps with these next next gens, 'crunch will get is cyber punk on, ehh?

Oh, and from what I just read, the PS4 will be officially announced in February, but probably won't be ready until late next year.

All I ask, all I want, is that the PS4 be backwards compatible. I hated the fact that the PS3 wouldn't play PS2 games, especially being twice the cost. Oh, and of course the PS4 better make use of its "improved graphics / ultra HD"; the PS3 didn't bring out anything new to the field, even with the much acclaimed "cell".

Gaming hardware. 277638789 I read that last line and the first thing that popped in my head was:

"All right... all right... but apart from better
sanitation and medicine and education and irrigation and
public health and roads and a freshwater system and baths
and public order... what have the Romans done
for us?"

PS4 to be announced next week Wednesday... follow the link below to see what the controller is supposed to look like. I see what could be a touchscreen and possible microphone / speaker mesh. Headphones plug into the controller as well.

Oooh... a touchscreen. What DOESN'T have a touch screen these days?! Oh, and have you seen THIS? Interesting article, nice vid, and looking like a quality system for the future... but the price, with the (I believe) necessary cell tower access, will be a killer.

And on a lighter note, I bumped into an article which explained why my wife's Yahoo looks stupider all of a sudden... the head people at Yahoo have decided they needed to make the Yahoo homepage more social networky, so users can have access to facebook from yahoo, and be able to share their yahoo news on facebook seamlessly. Game... set... and fuck you, yahoo!

So while examing this Yahoo social headquarter, I saw an article about this new-fangled PS4. Oh my... copy/paste:
While the PS4 will feature improved graphical performance, Sony plans to use more than flashy hardware to appease finicky gamers. The system will highlight social aspects, such as the ability to share gaming footage. It will include a new version of the company’s classic DualShock game controller, now featuring a touchpad, motion controls, and a built-in ‘share’ button.
Other features to look forward to include much quicker startup times, the ability to browse live gameplay videos of your friends and a partnership with Facebook and UStream that lets people play with their real world friends, as well as people they've met in games.

I have highlighted some of my favorite sad moments about the article.

I never understood the need to share gaming footage. Maybe to share some information / location of an object... but why not just tell the person? And even if there was some sound reasoning behind this, how would you know to record that footage before hand? You'd have to play through, go "oh, my friends would like to watch me do this", reload, play through again, and hope the same scenario plays out? *eye twitch*

Quicker start-up time? Yes, by god, yes. My time is damn precious, and the need to wait three seconds versus five will mean a great deal to me. Do I really need my PS4 to sync with facebook and ustream in order for me to play with my friends? Between all of us here, do we even have the same games? Do we have the time to play the same game at the same time? I know, I know... most people do, so that's just a personal rant... but the PS3 already has a friend option, let's you know who is playing what. Seems they're over-complicating the simple.

And that deal about being able to watch live gameplay feeds of your friends... do we really want this? How will the system differentiate (holy shit, I spelled that right on my first try?) between live gameplay and, say, watching porn online? Or, you know, "Hmm, I wonder what 'crunch is doing... *click* oh my, dear lord above, what the fuck is that thing?!"

...

Here's some things I've found in various articles.

Quote :
how you can potentially play your friend’s game remotely or play a game as you download it.

The PS4 won’t be able to play PS2 or PS3 games

focus on social networks

So, even though things haven't been truly revealed, these are pretty damning rumors in my opinion. Playstation has gone metrocentric and is leading us to a world of facebook gaming. I can't understand the lack of backwards capability; that in itself is pretty fucked. In years apst, I have always been on the PS bandwagon, and rightfully so, but with this? I'm thinking I can wait a while.

PostSubject: WARNING!   Gaming hardware. EmptyThu May 23, 2013 10:27 pm

PEOPLE! I say "NAY!" Woe to those, and rue the day, and avoid Xbox One!!!

I've been reading some carp off and on about this new hiccup of Microsoft's (funny how we called Win8 Metro 'gay' a long time ago, and Sooth posts an article saying Microsoft finally figured it out). Well, a little bitta go I went to my old gaming source, Gamespot, to see if they had a review of my latest favorite game, and the top of the page was a big banner with stuff like "Microsoft talks 'always on', used games, and blah blah blah". OOH! Used games? I will read this article! Good fucking gravy almighty!!! (say, that's some good gravy!) I will link the article, but for those who just want to catch my vomit before it hits the floor, I will add some of my favorite points from the article. Here's the link: Xbox One Article

Now... "I have to ask about used games. Will the box support used games and how is that model going to work?

So we'll talk about some of the 'how' at a later date, but I will say that we understand the importance of the secondary market. The secondary market was important in the current generation. We designed Xbox One understanding secondary market would be important in the new generation as well. We'll share more details, but people should know that it is a design criteria for us on the new box.

So... Microsoft, who already stated NO USED GAMES, now realizes how retarded that would be for sales, and needs to implement it, but they can't say 'how' yet because they haven't figured it out? WTF...

I think it was mentioned that all new games have to be installed.

Yes.

Nothing to say here, until further down the article we get:
Given that all games need to be installed, is a 500GB [hard drive]…that doesn't seem very big. I'm assuming some of the games are going to be pretty huge now coming on Blu-rays.

We did a lot of testing; we looked at the content that's being created today and what our roadmap looked like in terms of content creation. One thing I'd say about content today is you see content being delivered at many different levels. You have big, disc-based games that come out, but you also see games that start more service-related; where they come out small and they grow as the person builds their experience. Our math says that the 500 gigs will be a lot of storage space for the gamer in terms of how much game local data that they will save. Obviously, the game is yours, so if you were to delete something off the hard drive, you could obviously always re-install something if [you] ran into a situation where you were running out of space. But our math, when we look at the number of games that somebody usually owns and the content they consume, we think the hard drive will be a nice hard drive for people.

So, 500 gigs is FINE if you use a couple disc-based games and then just play small downloadables. IF you really like big games, just uninstall and reinstall later! After all, Microsoft knows what YOU want, cuz they did a lot of testing.

Am I right in saying the Xbox One will only work when the Kinect is attached to it?

Yes.

So, when you're watching a movie on your...wait...fucking WHAT?! Shocked And that's where the kicker really gets his/her toes into your nutbag. Find that Q&A on the article page, and read the rest of the article (maybe 5 paragraphs) which is all about the Kinect always on stuff. Irony. Years ago, Microsoft kicked Apple's ass in the PC world, but Apple had the "Big Brother" commercial on TV. Now, it looks like Microsoft will be taking the Big Brother torch and running with it.

How does one go about reading a carp? Wouldn't it be slippery, or flop around a lot?

These next (next) gen game consoles seem to be a tad... nerving, to say the least. Just read the PS4 launch stuff at this site and what strikes me is the patent that locks or blocks used games: no borrowing games to your friends or buying used; if your system dies and you have to buy a new one, you have to purchase an unblock code for the game; no buying used games without needing to buy the code as well (but the article does say that it will play used... but it has this capability).

Suspect

With your post, 500GB doesn't seem like much, not when the current systems are already pushing that. But I'm not going to argue that one, because I have done the uninstall / reinstall thing (just as long as one doesn't delete the saved game files!).

{EDIT from this point down. Adding some stuff}

What? WHAT?! Just read Shadow's linked article, and all I can say is "what?". Oh, I can say more, believe you me, but I'm trying to keep it clean.

There is this one part of the article (okay, a few, but one main part) that really struck me, and it relates to the Kinect.

Quote :
With the new [Kinect], I had the demo earlier, and it seems like it's tracking an awful lot. While I'm playing a game, you're tracking my heart rate, my attention. Am I looking at the screen? Am I distracted? Am I smiling?

We should be careful in how we characterize those features. Those are features that are available to game developers. You think about emotion or where your head's looking; these are tools that a game designer can use in developing the game and creating more immersion. The amount of capabilities in Kinect has grown tremendously. But the data that it's collecting is really specific to the experience that you're in.

It seems like the kind of data that could be theoretically collected and then used to influence [future developers] for a sequel or something.

I won't just focus on Kinect because I think about how far somebody gets in a game, where the pinch-points are, where do people fail. All those analytic capabilities are really important to us in designing future iterations of games and finding out what people love. That capability to the developer is really important as they try to get better at their craft and make better experience. But we obviously want to put the gamer in control of what data gets shared.

So you need the camera on to use the console, even though the article says it has the capability to turn off capabilities (articles own words). BUT the system spies on you? It records what you are doing in addition to keeping track of your freaking medical condition?! That information is then being sent somewhere so that they can supposedly make better games?!

Shocked

The conspiracy / paranoid side of me is going nuts right now. I don't like how Google has manipulated itself into every aspect of everyone's life, of tracking our every movement, and now Microsoft has created a system that spies on us?

Am I being paranoid? I don't think so, especially seeing as how I'm not the only one who believes this.

LINK

The Kinect is ALWAYS on, even when the Xbox One is turned off! The camera works in the dark! Microphone always on (voice activated device)!

No! No no no no no no no!

Maybe it has nothing to do with conspiracies in the way you think. MAYBE...just maybe, Microsoft is getting ready for a newer, darker future. It's already a given that porn is one of the biggest money makers on the web, so maybe Microsoft is gearing up for a more "mature" business model including an "always on" amateur porn site! Just think, slip a little line or two into the End User License Agreement, somewhere between the user taking responsibility to plug the 'One' into the proper voltage outlet, and that Microsoft owns the rights to the hardware design. Somewhere in there, in cryptic legalese, it will state: The purchaser [End User] agrees that any and all sexual activity committed within the sight/sound range of the Kinect is the sole property of Microsoft and its affiliates [companies], and those same companies hold exclusive rights to use the recorded sexual activity in any way for no less than one full year from midnight on the date the sexual activity was recorded.

Then, a year after 'One's' launch... Microsoft has long understood that sex is becoming less taboo as the main stream media has been paving the way for sex to be in everyones' homes for years. Now, Microsoft is proud to announce the new OneFucker! OneFucker is a streaming video service available on the Xbox One, much like Hulu or Netflix, but OneFucker is streaming only sex, and only REAL people having sex. Real people like you, your neighbors, your pets, anyone with a Kinect! Microsoft has done a lot of testing, and we know sex is a good way to bring people together. By using your contacts, you will instantly know if any of your friends have recently starred in any new videos, and with the seamless integration of Skype, you can even real-time chat with your friends about their videos! In addition, by using the One's custom Bing search features, you can click a picture of anyone on the web, and OneFucker will scan that person's face, search the millions of videos already available, and let you know if that person has made any videos! If not, you can even have a Hotmail alert set up to let you know the moment that person does star in their very own home movie! So have fun, throw away your inhibitions, and watch OneFucker! Premium streaming costs may apply. Watch us at E3 for an official unveiling of OneFucker!
----------------------------------------

Now, on to the rest.... ALWAYS check the dates in your online articles. I read about the PS4 used game stuff a week after reveal, but since then, I have read that Sony is dropping that used game unlock purchase crap. Xbox is now saying (again, one week after reveal) that they WILL allow used games, but they will require the purchased code unlocks. So it's still in the rumor mill, but there's a LOT of folk saying that having to purchase a code for every used game will result in a big middle finger aimed at the traditional console market. Yeah...

I'm seriously starting to think NOW is the time to return to PC gaming (don't even get me started on the article in the latest Game Informer sub-titled: Today's High-End PC is Not True Next-Gen Gaming). Also, I'm seriously eyeballing the Ouya for the needs of "plug into TV and play" functionality. I would miss my PS titles (any that don't release for PC), but why do these console designers need to be such dipshits about used games, always-online, and playing in the cloud?!

You know, X and Sony are both saying they are expanding the field on their markets for small indie developers... IF I was an indie developer, with no worries about MY game getting sold used cuz it's a download, IF MS and Sony do this used game unlock thing, I would NOT release my indie game on their systems just on principle!

Posted May 21, 2013. Yes, the article says one thing (no buying of codes for used), but it also states that Sony now has a patent to limit or block the use of used games, that the game automatically registers to the particular system it is first used on.

Just don't care for the implication.

But I gotta tell ya, even though I'm not an X Box person, that whole Kinect thing really bothers me.

According to one of the articles I read with an interview with Sony something-er-other bigwig, that patent is already several years old. Just something they wanted to get a lock on so nobody else steals it, but they don't use EVERY patent they lock in. Doing a little dig, and apparently the patent found the light of day from people purposefully scouring patents trying to dig specs or news or dirt on the PS4 before the big reveal. Got everybody's knickers in a twist months before reveal. Sony says that's not THE plan, but they're looking at options. My thing is, if they had the patent, and they know it works, why not slip it into one of the previous PS3 updates? Start screwing us right away and test it out... see how many gamers would pay their damn unlock fees. Maybe they figure new hardware, if people want the "next-gen" then they WILL follow our rules.

Yeah, that Kinect always on thing... Not good. Vader had some damn fine points there, but not sure if they were his or taken from your Sooth's facebook post, so I'll just say again... not good.
