Microsoft suckeerity Empty
PostSubject: Microsoft suckeerity   Microsoft suckeerity EmptyMon Feb 13, 2012 7:55 am

A new-ish development I just learned about. There was some talk in the tech circles that Windows 8 was adding some new security features which would make it impossible for Windows 8 to dual boot linux or even other Windows OSes. Turns out that's not entirely true. Windows 8 is including a new
Quote :
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, which improves security and boot times. This feature prevents viruses and other nasty rootkits from infecting your PC by detecting them before the OS even loads.

It's basically a Microsoft secure boot that would happen when other OSes would run a dual boot menu (like linux's GRUB). According to the schmoes at Microsoft, this UEFI can be disabled if users are willing to sacrifice the added level of protection in exchange for dual booting. Added bonus?
Quote :
Another issue with this secure boot is that apparently you won’t be able to install new hardware unless it’s been properly signed if it’s enabled.

Yes, cuz Microsoft does an amazing job of digital signatures for non-Microsoft hardware, and keeps those signatures updated regularly....

Oh dear god... So the way you log into Windows 8 is by signing in with a hotmail (or other) email address? Video preview of Windows 8, and it felt like I was watching a new OS collaboration between Apple, Google, and Ubuntu... Personal opinion based on this video: anybody who is against gay marriage and still gives Windows 8 a thumbs up doesn't understand their own sexuality. 17+ minute video, and I had to stop before the 10 minute mark because it just hurt too much!

If this is the future of desktop PCs, when games start coming out requiring Windows 8, I will be done gaming. I realize this is just like Android for the desktop, but Android isn't for the desktop, it's for touchscreen handheld devices. Can you imagine using Android on a 24 inch monitor and swiping screens with the mouse?! Yeah, me neither. But upgrade to Windows 8 and that sensation can all be yours!!! Just hit preview to see if the video embedded properly and I saw the video image... I have to go... I feel ill... pale

Microsoft suckeerity Empty
PostSubject: Re: Microsoft suckeerity   Microsoft suckeerity EmptyThu Nov 01, 2012 12:15 pm

The narrator is an idiot. Only a minute and a half into it and I'm... at odds. Thanks for telling me the colors of the rainbow! Oh, what's that? There's no difference between a custom set-up and an express set-up? Huh, who knew!

Let us continue, a moment by moment breakdown...

Ahh, you don't need hotmail. The log-on menu says "Use your favorite email address as a Microsoft account to sign into Windows 8." (playing this video on the youtube page so I can read the tiny shit and comments. yay, comments!)

Wait... "we need to verify your password"? What? WHAT?!

Imagine that... loading... loading...

Oooo, metro icons. Anything like metro-sexual? What's the point of having a background image when you can't see the damn thing because there are now blocks instead of icons covering everything? And metro-centric? What the fuck does metrocentric mean?

Oh wait, there's an icon to go to your desktop. WTF. "But the desktop isn't what's important, it's metro." *eye twitch*

"You can see people by going to your [freaking people block] and see your social network accounts." Yeah, and guess what? I can go on the freaking internet, log on my socail networks, and see who's on. I don't need a dummy button for that... that's what bookmarks, nay, that's what human memory is for.

Messaging block, for all your IMs. Fuck, what happened to having them in your tool bar? Start up menu?

... I'm not even four minutes into this? Dear god, I'm already crying! Have we really come this low as a society where we need dummy buttons? Let's continue...

"The neat thing about IE9 is that you can pin specific websites to your start menu." Yeah? Yeah? Bookmark it, you twat, and then click/drag it to where ever the hell you want, you lazy bastard.

Pictures. Okay, fine. So they took the folder and placed it in the 'metro' view... helps idiots from getting lost by going to the start menu and clicking on the word 'pictures'.

Videos. Same as pictures.

Weather. Oh, here's a good one. Don't bother going to wunderground or weather.com or whatever. Don't worry about igoogle and the weather feature. Hell, don't need to download the weather channel ap. L-A-Z-Y. "It'll actually tell me my weather here." Fucktard stupid ass narrator! Six minutes in, eleven more?

IE. "Oh look, it's on the bottom now. No top bar searching." Damn, I've been waiting for that for years!

The Store. Where you can get Microsoft aps. Ya know, let's see if the things on Microsoft runs properly before we buy things to run on Microsoft, shall we? Want to know what ap I'd like to see? One that will tell you of the crash rate of Microsoft programming, of failure rates, and the number of patches you'll need in order to make it run smoothly.

A block for maps. "Uses BING maps." Go to your map generator of choice, and then paste the damn page on your desktop! "Bing maps will show your location and what's around you." Thank god for that! I'd hate to see a map that didn't! 8 minutes, 23 seconds...

"Sky Drive", just like "I Cloud". Hey... wanna know a secret? Wanna be able to see any of your stuff from wherever? Save it in a gmail account. You can save all your pictures and videos and documents there and not worry about lack of room.

Music. "This exceeded the Zune market place." Screw Zune, screw Microsoft. go to google and search for youtube MP3 converter, or just go to http://www.youtube-mp3.org/ Paste the youtube video you want to download, click convert / download... BAM... that youtube vmusic video is now an MP3 file on your computer. FOR FREE.

X Box live games. Yes, because every PC owner has an X Box.

Camera button, so that when you connect your camera, all the stuff goes here. Now what we called this? "Open folder to view files."

Pre-installed aps. News... oooo; go to igoogle, or activate your Vista side bar! Sports... news icon, but for sports; same comment as for news. Track Flights... so you can keep track of flights; I neither travel, nor am I a terrorist, so this is useless. Stocks... seriously? If you have stocks, that means you have someone to report to you what is going on.

Hey look! You can pin the news to the left side of your screen! Wowee!

13 minutes. I'm done.

Microsoft suckeerity Empty
PostSubject: Re: Microsoft suckeerity   Microsoft suckeerity EmptyThu Nov 01, 2012 1:34 pm

Sooth, I LOL'd my way through your entire review. I'm glad to see a bit more of the red rage towards Microsoft. I felt the red rage, but was trying to keep my post semi-pro. Two things to address between your review and the video.

#1. The comment about Xbox Live and not everybody having an Xbox. My take on what the reviewing dipshit said is that Windows 8 will be able to download and play some of these Xbox live games, and I'm sure you will be able to access trophies on your desktop (or kudos, or guy-on-guy ass grabs... whatever Microsoft is giving these days). Because, what if you don't have an Xbox? Wouldn't it be cool to still have all the functionality so you can friend people for games you can't play?!

#2. Your review of the idiot's review of the pictures, music, video, cloud, and social CRAP. As I hinted, this is Microsoft's answer to Apple and Google. Google has Android, and Chrome, and the internet, and it can all be synced on your desktop, phone, tablet, laptop, cyber-implants (mmmm... deckers Very Happy ). Microsoft has been slurping up the popular for years and tweaking it for their own idiotic ends. "MP3 player? Let's stick Windows on one! Smartphone? Let's stick Windows on one! Touchscreen tablet? Let's stick Windows on one! WHAT?! Google has a new OS that can sync everybody's everything?! Let's stick Windows on one!" I say this because this metrocentric (cough cough) layout SCREAMS phone/tablet touchscreen. This will be the OS Microsoft sticks on their first handheld gaming system... probably called X-Metro. "Wrap your hands around our Metro!" I'm NOT defending, merely stating it's kind of obvious why MS has chosen this "route" for their future. I know you don't have an Android device, but Google's been doing the same thing... to access pretty much ANYTHING, you have to log in with an email account, of course they steer you towards gmail, and that's like the security thing because it then knows who you are and syncs your google info across PC and phone/tablet. MS wants some of that action, especially after seeing the billions of people with Android phones (I just saw something... yesterday(???) that said there were close to... either 4 billion people or X people with $4 billion worth of smart phones in the world right now).

AND! AND! AND! Your post got me damn curious... NOT METRO... just curious. I wiki'd metrocentric. Page does not exist. I googled it, and the first hit took me to wordnik with a definition of metrocentric. Guess what! There's no definition listed, but there's examples of the word's usage!!! And if you scroll down, it is NOT a valid scrabble word! So I continued at dictionary-dot-com and got NO DICTIONARY RESULTS!! Can you imagine?! Now... to the urbandictionary...

Um...what? Urbandictionary says: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Metrocentrism

Correct me if I'm wrong (actually, Vader would know this one), but with anything concerning X Box you have to have a monthly fee... I think it may just be $5, but it's there. Only then could you download games and such. But, like I said, I could be wrong.

I understand the need for icons of this nature on hand held devices, just not for something of desktop size (as per your original post). With 19" screens being the minimum norm for desktops, of what use is there for this imagery?

All throughout the video I was chanting no-no-no, with the things we've done with the desktop, with things others certainly more smarter than us have done with the desktop, and what Windows 8 has done is taken a mental LEAP backwards. It's beyond making things simpler, it's a matter of... a matter of...

It's seems like they've taken the computer, and they've dummied it down. Yes, the desktop is still there, and yes, you can probably set things up so that the desktop is what automatically comes up, but to announce Windows 8 as being something else other than a computer.

Microsoft has taken a fad... yes, a fad (albeit a functional one)... and turned it into something that it wasn't meant for. This is being geared to the teens / early 20s crowd, those wonderful idiots who can't seem to exist without being in electronic contact with other drones. Seriously, what's new with all the "amazing" things Windows 8 can do that isn't already being done on a Windows run based machine?

*sigh*

So did you see all the anti-8 videos on the side?

I did not check any other videos on the subject yet. Still waiting for that initial nausea to pass. Laughing Besides that, I don't think I can properly have an opinion on Windows 8 as I have testicles and prefer women. If I ever get my metrocentricity switched on, I think I will then understand what's going on in that video.

I have grown tired of my computer getting louder and louder, even though nothing is supposedly running in the background. Amazing how Windows does that.

Anyway, installed Ubuntu 12 point whatever. Much better. Faster computer, quieter too.

Down with Microsoft!

Not much to say about this that hasn't already been said. All I will do is post a quote from the article, and a link.

(Most of this is already common knowledge, but I'm just surprised no one posted it yet, seeing how much we liked it and all).

Quote :
"Almost everybody in the tech industry already knows the [Windows 8] experience is suboptimal," said Patrick Moorhead, president of research firm Moor Insights & Strategy. "Microsoft was the last one…in the room to realize this was the case."

Windows 8 sucks? Really?

Playas be playing. But to answer your question seriously, it's hard to judge an OS based on the maybe 2 hours I have into it so far. I know I'm certainly glad I didn't have to "taste the rainbow" and join the Metro movement, as Microsoft has allowed Windows 8 to make the big jump to the "Modern UI"!!! (yes, it's the same fucking thing. They just changed the name. Just thank the stars it's not called Metro anymore!)

That piece of levity aside... SO FAR I see no serious flaws with it. "OH MY GOD! IT'S TWO UI's AND ONE IS ALL MOBILE AND SHIT! EWWWW!" Let's not forget "I CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET TO REGULAR WINDOWS!"

First, when you mouse over the top or bottom right corners, a "smart" menu pops up (very ubuntu-ish), and in there you can seamlessly switch between "windows 7 desktop" and the Modern UI.

Second, the big ugly buttons that make up the Modern UI? Microsoft gives you one right out of the box that says...wait for it... DESKTOP. Guess what happens when you click that? Yes, you can.

Third, if that's too much hastle, they actually gave the "windows" key on most keyboards a purpose now. Hit it, and WHAM... desktop... again, and WHAM... modern.

Otherwise, the desktop runs like Win7 without a start button (supposed to be implemented in October when 8.1... (8.2??) comes out). So, when I'm reading previews where people say they HATE Win8 cuz Microsoft won't give them a standard windows environment... what the fuck. Or how about the review I was reading wherein they said it should be "Window 8"?? (notice not windowS) because microsoft no longer lets you have two windows open side by side on the screen, or you can't switch back and forth by clicking the taskbar. That would have been the deal breaker for me, so I jumped right in and tried it. OF COURSE you can't run multiple windows in ModernUI...it's for mobile and touchscreen devices primarily (oh, works fine with a mouse). Go into the Win7 desktop, I had notepad, chrome, control panel, and computer open at the same time, one over the other, switching willy-nilly by way of the taskbar.

SO FAR... it's a refreshing change from the same old... not quite as exciting as the change to ubuntu. Not a huge fan of the ModernUI, but you basically don't have to be in it at all. There's even a setting I read about to allow Win8 to boot into the desktop. However, from a gaming perspective, I'm looking at the ModernUI and thinking when I get XPadder running games AND windows, it will be very console-ish to just grab a controller, right stick the mouse over one of those big boxes with a game in it, click and go.

Damn to long for more intel right now... but I will say based on some stuff I've read from the "Dvorak" crowd, some of the things Microsoft has implemented, this OS has a lot of potential for the future... as long as it will play second-hand games and I don't have to have a webcam on 24/7! Windows 9

Windows 9? Already?!

Okay, I understand the need to stay above the competition, but come on now... if you make a good solid product, there'd be no need to make a new and improved product, just release updates. Look at the longevity of XP, fer gawd's sake! Hell, even the troublesome Vista has managed to survive the years. Is there really any interface issues that haven't been addressed, or can there possibly be anything that needs to be made "easier"? Just make a grand unifying OS already, and stop with the new releases, stick with updates!

Oh, wait... I suppose they couldn't really make money then, could they? Wonder how Linux does it.
