The 'Punk Movement(s) Empty
PostSubject: The 'Punk Movement(s)   The 'Punk Movement(s) EmptyTue Jul 05, 2011 7:28 pm

This came up over the weekend: Dieselpunk. For those who don't have any idea whatsoever, it's an offshoot of Steampunk. Yousayhuhwuzzat?!

Ohhhhhh....edit edit edit. Before you read the next paragraph, know that even I forgot the importance of history. Steampunk is listed as a derivative of Cyberpunk. The point of this post is Dieselpunk and Steampunk, but if you really want to look into it, cyberpunk is still the original (sorta)...

Just a quick sum up...Steampunk started as a fantasy setting or theme for books and games, and through its inherent COOLNESS, has become a full-fledged underground movement, involving fashion, music, foods, conventions, and if I were to search I would bet there's probably a Steampunk social network site. The essence behind Steampunk involves the Victorian time period, but the technology of the time is greatly enhanced to almost modern levels through the power of steam (and other resources depending on the depth of the backstory you might happen upon). 1800's steam-powered "clackers" endlessly flipping copper or brass plates in a steady stream of 1's and 0's, reading keypunch cards and running programs, giving computer power to the world almost 100 years ahead of time. Steam-powered passenger zeppelins, cars, tanks, mechanical horses, and even clockwork geared sex doll automatons. Brass, copper, leather, and coal are the symbols and forces behind steampunk. Look it up...it's awesome.

So anyway, the offshoot known as Dieselpunk was brought up, and since I was the main bearer of information, I decided to share some links. First, I will link to the Steampunk wiki, for anyone wanting to learn more: Steampunk Wiki

Then, because it's an all-emcompassing link, there is a wiki list type page titled: Cyberpunk Derivatives This includes Steampunk, Dieselpunk, and several others. A good starting point to learning more.

Just google steampunk and find what you want. But since I'm sharing info for Dieselpunk this time around, there actually exists a dot-org filled with awesomeness on this subculture. Where Steampunk is based on Victorian times being enhanced and lengthened, Dieselpunk has to do with the 1920s-1945s, but the streamlined look of the higher classes is spread worldwide-ish. So, the link for the dot-org is: Dieselpunk.org

I hope you find something awesome to look at and perhaps comment on!

Wow, went to the dieselpunk-dot-org right after posting the link. The google link states that the site is for Diesel AND Steam Punkers. Went to PHOTOS on the top menu, and found some nice pics, then hit the MUSIC menu. Right at the top, there's a Dieselpunk radio built into the site, and starts playing by itself. Under the radio it says: The dieselpunks jukebox blends tunes from the classic era
(inspiration for dieselpunks) with modern dieselpunk artists. The first track that started playing was the first radio broadcast of the attack on Pearl Harbor! The second track was Abney Park's song 'Until the Day You Die' (VaderXanth's eyes just went big and he said aloud "Really?! KEEN!"
Razz
Next I got to hear 'The Charleston' by James P. Johnston. Then came 'Digga Digga Doo' by Asylum Street Spankers, which I thought was just a semi-decent 30s-ish song by modern people, until the instrumental solo in the middle which was a 'swing/jazz' version of the song being played in the Mos Eisley Cantina in Star Wars! (crap, just showed my geekitude...
Rolling Eyes) Anyway, the site is awesome, and you can pop out the radio so you can listen while browsing the rest of it! I'm sure you will hear more about Abney Park, steampunk music, and even Dr. Steel as more of us 'Punkers start posting more in the music section.
(Yes Vader, I will be popping out the jukebox later and using it as background for tanks...SOOOOO fitting!)

I, a Toy Soldier within the mighty ranks of the great Dr Steel, do hereby claim the falsity that is dieselpunk. They are pretenders, no more, and shall fall before the awesome power of toy and 'bot, ushering forth a new Utopia, a... a... Utopian Playland.

And what is this Abney Park you speak of? I hear their music and their singing, but all I can envision are muppets. Muppets I tell you! So in that regard, as puppet type beings, they shall fit nicely into the vision that is held by Dr Steel.

Although this is probably a bad video to introduce people to Dr Steel, it is a damned good song... especially when, well, nevermind, just watch it. I would recommend Lament for a Toy Factory, Lulla-bye bye, and... oh hell, just go down the youtube list!

Come to think of it, the slower half of this song would make for a great theme for this website! Listen to it, and you'll know what I mean!

I will admit, though, that Abney Park is probably more steampunk than the great Dr Steel; at least Park's songs involve steampunk themes.

Come to think of it, is Dr Steel even steampunk? Sure, he may dress in that style, but that's pretty much where any similarities end.

Oh well.

I was thinking this through a couple nights ago. The whole steampunk, dieselpunk, whalepunk thing. These subcultures are going mainstream, which I suppose is what subculturers always want. Not everybody understands, but everybody (generalizations here...) at least knows what steampunk is. They may not understand the subtle differences between dieselpunk and steampunk, but they understand the concept that it's all a fictional "era out of time." Thanks to movies, comics, music, cosplay, novels, websites, FASHION, ETC, steampunk has gained a larger hold on culture than even the SCA, which is the original "era out of time." Of course, don't quote me, cuz I don't have those numbers in front of me... but I hain't never seen no category for SCA music on LastFM (where I originally found Abney Park). Hell, I would be willing to wager that more people own at least one steampunk related something that they bought for the steampunk purpose than there are Civil War reenactors, for another "era out of time" example.

My point? These steamy, fossil fuel burning subcultures (heh... whale oil... fossil fuel... heh) are great and all, and I'm glad the fantasy of it has wiggled its way into the mainstream, but what the fuck ever happened to Cyberpunk?! You never hear about it anymore!!!

Is it because of smart phones, touchscreens, broadband, free streaming tv? Because the tech is "getting
there?" Nobody wants to write a book about computers with touchscreens because we have them all over now? I say hog balls! Because Cyberpunk promised us something awesome, and the world has NOT delivered, smart phones or not. I still don't have retinal implants to give me a HUD inside my vision. I still can't go to the body doc and get implants to increase strength or reflexes. I STILL cannot plug my consciousness into
a 3D world wide computer world! Sure, we can have steamy dirigibles and diesel trains and stuff... but a friggin chrome USB socket in our temples?! Nope, sorry.

AND... cyber culture had music WAY before the other punk movements... so because I have to...

Steampunk I get. Wild Wild West, airships and Victorian Age / War of the Worlds / 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, where the technology of steam wasn't hindered by hoof and mouth.

Cyberpunk is cool, too, although I readily admit I just know of the decker aspect of things, and of the movie Johnny Mnemonic.

But dieselpunk? What the hell is dieselpunk? That just plainly confuses me. "Let's make a genre based on internal combustible engines!" Yeah, show them that you won't let your creative process to incorporate existing technology into a genre based... on... existing... technology.

Seriously. Can anyone really explain dieselpunk to me? I've tried looking it up online, and there's nothing that really defines it, at least as far as I can see.

Oh, and to answer the question posed, I think it's because society and technology and every day life has become what the cyperpunk authors created, or are, in the very least, within reach of ten years or so. Cybernetically controlled computers. Robotics. Gene splicing. Exoskeletons. Implanted telephone technology... and yes, even normal looking sunglasses that double as a computer screen. We have those who constantly live within the internet, those who constantly live plugged into technology.

Granted, it isn't the same as plugging in; we don't have that technology yet.

...

Oh wait, yes we do...

A third comment here, as I just found this wiki page describing all the various subgenres of cyberpunk (of which steam and diesel fall into). Meh gawd, I can't believe half this stuff even exists!

lol! Elfpunk! lol!

AND... your link has a definitive description of dieselpunk, so there you go! The answer is right there, in your link. Your link that goes to the wiki about cyberpunk derivatives, which is the page at the end of your link, in case you forgot what your link went to. I sure wish I had been the first to find and post your link, so I could accuse you of copying my awesomeness when you posted your link. But alas, I guess I have nothing to say about your link.... PFFFT!

Shadowcrunch, in this thread's OPENING post, making links out of the words 'Steampunk wiki' and 'Cyberpunk Derivatives', thus proving that YOU didn't FIND nuffin!... wrote:

Return of the necropost...

Most of you know that I've been either crafting steampunk guns,or have been acquiring pieces for future steampunk projects.  One could argue that my gas-mask themed Halloween costume from a couple years ago is the start of a steampunk persona, minus the common elements of brass fittings.

But, the more involved I get with the genre, the more I realize something is missing: a history.  It seems that anyone who is a part of this subculture has also created an elaborate history of themselves.  In other words, they have created a background story for their character.  Each weapon has a name and developmental history, each person has a character name and history which details their deeds and drives, each person is a member of an airship or other steampunky vehicle.

Sadly, I don't have one.  Yes, I made a history of sorts regarding the weapons designer for one particular gun, but that's it.  But today, all that changed.

Was going through Walmart's clearance section during my lunch break today when I came across several interesting jewelry do-it-yourself pieces.  I liked the look of the chains, the weight and feel, and they looked ornamental enough for my purposes; one chain in particular had glass globes held in place by antiqued metal bases.  Thought I was done looking, so I turned to leave when I saw a nice pendant coat-of-arms piece: two lions holding a crest, encircled by a twisted braid.  Saw there were quite a few of those pendants, so I bought the lot of them.  These will give all my creations a sense of uniformity, as the pendants will be incorporated into all the steampunk creations.

So, within the next few days, I shall be updated the history of my weapons (or rather, the designer).  Is that necessarily going to be me?  I don't know.  I'm not planning on it, as many a cosplayer goes that route.  Perhaps I employ the designer, or maybe I stole from him.  The one thing I know I'm going to do is incorporate the Cthulhu mythos, just don't know if I'm one of the good guys or bad...

{edit}

Here's an image of the pendant. Place on a dark red surface (cardboard or felt), affix to whatever piece I'm working on, and boom... my own manufacturer's mark.
