Soothsayer Challenge: the revamp Empty
PostSubject: Soothsayer Challenge: the revamp   Soothsayer Challenge: the revamp EmptyTue May 06, 2014 3:57 pm

This was originally brought up by 'crunch years ago, but as with most of our discussions and plans and ideas, it gradually drifted, fading from memory or participation.  I am officially blowing the dust off of this idea and bringing it to the forefront... or rather, to the top of the forum's scrolling portal, up until a time where it drops into the lower positions.

But at least an effort is being made, yes?

Okay, here's the background: 'crunch once challenged, or rather posed a project to us regarding a revamp of a character, any character.  We could rewrite the background, redesign the character, whatever we had to in order to make it ours, while still maintaining that character's essence.

DC and Marvel build off of each other's works to create their own characters (Superman > Hyperion, Batman > Nighthawk, Fantastic Four > Challengers of the Unknown), Image downright takes a character to make it their own (Venom > Spawn or Haunt, take your pick), or hell, one character might be bought by another company (Angela, Image > Marvel).  Characters are always being revitalized and made "new" to keep with the times (Punisher, Viet Nam > Iraq War) or completely redesigned for a fresh and hip look that has nothing to do with what made them who they are (Lobo, see my rant in a different post).  Then there are the basic archtypes, which can define a character no matter what universe they belong in (Superman /  Supreme, Batman / Confessor).

You get the idea.  Take a character, take an idea, and make him your own.  There should be a big enough difference so that the character does appear original, but at the same time someone should be able to tell just what character he is (or was).  There are an extreme number of comic book characters out there for us to chose from for this project, it should be easy.  You don't have to draw your character if you don't want to, you can form a basis on HeroMachine or something... but you should at least write a background or history.  Tell us about your character, what makes him yours, how he differs from the original.

However you do this, keep one thing in mind: no What Ifs or Elseworld type scenarios.  No Nazi Superman because he crashed in pre-WWII Germany (was probably done), no designs of Iron Man being a Reaver (been done... aka cyborg War Machine), nothing easy.  Be original!  Be creative!

Should we put a time frame on this?  I think so.  No one's going to do anything unless there's a time frame involved.  First I have to figure how many people are going to read this... and then factor in the amount of time it's going to take before someone responds to this post...  *taps finger*...  since we're doing something relatively easy, something that we've discussed in the past, this shouldn't be too new of an idea...

Okay.  The deadline is the end of May, Saturday the 31st.

All persons wishing to partake in this project should respond to this post, just to say "yes, I shall take you up on this challenge", and then have at it.  You can make as many characters as you want, just make sure you have an image and a background for each of them.  Also, make a separate post for each creation.

No one should be allowed to comment on another's character until June 1st!  This isn't to hinder the creator, but rather to keep things going in one direction.

{EDIT}

Scratch that part about no What Ifs or Elseworld type scenarios. This whole thing is pretty much that! Just be original in the ideas... I know, it may be hard to think of something that hasn't been done, but I figure if you think it's original, then it's good for me.

Soothsayer Challenge: the revamp Empty

I guess by default the challenge goes to me, huh?

The character I chose to revamp was, of course, the Punisher. Since no one else entered this challenge, I didn't have to put much thought into things, so...

Frank Castiglione was a part of a mafia family, born and raised. His father had hopes that his son would grow up to be something better, to live a life that was better; this resulted in Frank eventually going to college on a sports scholarship, where his athletic skills and disposition caught the attention of a Marine recruiter. Frank graduated college, and enlisted in the Marines.

**While in the military, everything plays out the same as with the real Punisher, except he wasn't a Captain, but rather attained the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. This keeps things a bit more realistic.

Frank was discharged from the military under the "surviving son" regulation when his father died. Returning home, he was slowly brought back into the fold of the mafia (being the only family he knew / had left), eventually working his way up the ranks to Caporegime; it was here that things began to turn for the worse.

A rival and childhood friend of Frank's from within the organization, Billy Russo, believed that the Don had taken to Frank because of his dead father's history, and was ignoring Russo's achievements. That is why Frank moved up as quickly as he did; it wasn't because of Frank's training or military experiences or anything like that, oh no... Russo was just a jealous person, and ambitious.

So ambitious, in fact, that Russo began to plot and set things up to frame Castiglione for a variety os mishaps within the organization. Franks deals would go bad, members arrested if not killed, the authority informed of various actions. All fingers pointed back to Frank.

To reduce the heat and pressure from the government, the family decided the best course of action would be to remove Frank from the picture, to set him up to take a fall, a fatal fall, and be done with him once and for all: they contracted out his execution to a rival family.

This did not go exactly as planned. Frank survived, though his family lay dead. Realizing the potential wealth of knowledge they had, the authorities safe-guarded Frank and placed him within protective custody. It was here that Frank, through his own personal network, discovered the truth of what happened. Escaping the police, Frank started a one man war against the crime syndicate, utilizing his training from the military and the knowledge he had gained from being within the organization.
