Indie games to blow the mind... Empty
PostSubject: Indie games to blow the mind...   Indie games to blow the mind... EmptyTue Jul 19, 2011 9:18 pm

**Dumbed-down version of what was written here before**:: Modern game industry is stupid. They take old games that made lots of money and remake them with new pretty pictures and sounds. Change old 2D game to 3D, change the name, and release as "next-big-thing." Me sick of new games that play like old games I play 10 or more years ago. Me like looking for new games from game-maker guys who don't work for big companies, because they willing to try something new and different. Me like games new and different. Me try to list some games for yous all that I find new and different. Me not talking about one type of game, but all games. **End of dumbed-down edit**

This post is to inform the uninformed of us that there is still hope for games taking a chance on something new, and it's mostly all thanks to the Indie game scene. I will continue adding to this thread when I find games that fit my description of "Indie game you should play," but for now...

Quite a number of years ago (2001), an Indie game came out called "Uplink." It boasted iffy-2D spritey glowy-yet-nasty graphics, a poorish interface, and an awesome concept. You were a hacker, and you had to hack computer systems to steal data, sell the data, and use the cash to upgrade your computer to hack higher security systems. Best part? The mouse was rarely used...everything was done with typing commands!

The company that gave us Uplink has a new game coming out, and for an Indie development team, I say I have to play this. The game is called "Subversion" and it looks friggin awesome! Supposed to be out this year sometime. And just in case you don't feel like reading all the DEV blog stuff, here's a video: I recommend blowing it up in youtube so you can read all the little things going on like the tools being used and such. Watch the vid, and enjoy!

How the hell did you manage to not put in Duke 3D in your list of early FPS? Huh? Huh?

**Dumbed-down version**:: Me like frist-persun shooties. But me sick of new ones just like old ones but with shiny things added. Duke was good, but so was (deep breath): DOOM, Quake, Unreal, Marathon, Redline, System Shock, Terminator games, Wolfenstein 3D, Space Hulk, DOOM 2, Heretic, Witchaven, Hexen...(out of breath). But me not here to talk about frist-pershun shoopers. Me here for new games trying to not be like rest of new games. Or even old games that are getting chance for replay on internet web thingy. Me get back to it now... **End of dumbed-down version**

More on point with this thread though, I posted a reply with two more game tidbits earlier, but must have previewed without sending because the post isn't here, so here I go again. Shortly after that first post, I found another Indie game from a new Indie company started as a side-project by one of the guys who helped make Bioshock. His first game will be a free-to-play browser-based flash collectible card game. Aside from being free and in broswer, it's also being co-designed by Richard Garfield...yeah, he made Magic the Gathering. I have a link to an interview with the Indie developer guy wherein he talks about some of the game mechanics, purchasing system, and includes a screenshot. If you get a chance, give it a read! interview

Next, I also found an in-browser setup for playing a bunch of interactive fiction (what us old-timers called text adventures). This is actually kinda neat. The main link is: iplayif You should get some text with little or no explanation, and a text box about 3/4 the width of the page. Just type something in that box (example: lovecraft) and you will get a list of interactive fiction games playable through the system. I found this accidentally by way of a game called Anchorhead (type it in that search box) and it's based loosely on lovecraft fiction. Very nice! LOT of reading, so stay away unless you have time! One thing I will add, I didn't go very far into it, but it's the type of setup where if you want to go north you type 'n' and hit enter. 'climb fence, open window, se (southeast), nw (northwest), look' All the old commands you might remember seem to work here. Maybe you will find something interesting!

I was thinking today... this really isn't a FPS, is it? This seems to be more of a third-person. Not saying this to destroy the worth of the find, mind you; it just seems that the video presents a different sort of picture.

Obviously the whole concept of using one game type (FPS) as an example to represent the entire video game industry was a mistake. To cite examples for the purpose of strengthening my point, to use FPS games as that example to show how the old games that make money have been copied and revamped...it apparently leaves the reader feeling like this one example (FPS) is the whole point, even when I continue to specify that I seek any Indie game (FPS or NOT) that is willing to try being different. Since this must be a flaw in my explanations and descriptions, I will try to make my point easier to grasp by dumbing-down the first two posts through the edit process, and then MAYBE we can continue listing more Indie games and NOT focusing on FPS.

I don't think it was a matter of needing to be dummied, but rather a need of me needing sleep. I was stuck on the whole FPS thing from last night, and it just continued when I woke up.

Oh well.
