PostSubject: Ubuntu 11.04   Sat Jul 23, 2011 9:31 pm

It's times like tonight that I really miss the information we started to amass on the old forum. Just installed Ubuntu 11.04 again and one of my goals was making sure I could play DVDs. By default, Ubuntu won't run them because the region encoding is proprietary instead of open source. There's supposed to be workarounds, none of which worked for me, and helped cause the need for a reinstall (cuz I still don't know how to use terminal commands to reset everything I did in the last half hour). ANYWAY...found a site, followed the instructions (all 4 of them...wow) and Ubuntu 11.04 was suddenly able to read, mount, and play my DVDs with zero problems. ISH....

ISH? During the first terminal session, there's a point where you have to agree to a Microsoft True-type font EULA, and nothing seems to work! Found out in the comments of the site I will be linking, when the EULA pops up you have to hit -TAB- to highlight the [OK], then hit enter, and the process will finish....oh, the next [yes]or[no] that pops up, I was able to use the arrow keys to navigate those.

After THAT, there's screenshots of settings for the default ubuntu movie player, explaining a setting for deinterlacing on and off. I had to follow those instructions also, as my movie was bad jerky...but after checking one radio button, it's all good!!!

Now, the site is: http://www.dreamingisdigital.com/2011/05/13/how-to-play-dvds-in-ubuntu-11-04/

Recently installed Ubuntu 12 point something something, and I'm lovin' it (ba da ba ba baaah). Currently downloading and installing a program called PlayOnLinux which "easily allows you to install Windows games and programs on Linux". Going by the user reviews, this program "removes the hassel of dealing with wine prefixes and dll codes"... people have also mentioned they've installed / run Office 2007 and Quick Books Pro using this program with no bugs or errors.

And yes, people have mentioned their games, too.

Okay, here's the scoop: PlayOnLinux wortks great. Find something online that you want to download, but it isn't Linux compatible? Download and save the program in the Windows format. Open up PlayOn, and it will show a list of the downloaded Windows programs... highlight it, click on run (or install, which ever). It'll ask a couple questions, install it, and you are good to go! I haven't tested to see what it can all do, but that isn't the point: Linux will run Windows programs.

A second program I found that makes things a wee bit more useful is called GDebi Package Installer. Ever find a program you want to install, in Linux format, but it just doesn't work? That's what always threw me with Linux... you had to be a programmer to understand this stuff. Not no more! With GDebi installation is a breeze! Download and save the program you want, and then open it with GDebi; hit install, and it takes care of everything!

Both of these programs are downloadable through the Ubuntu Software Center.

Forgot to mention, for the PlayOn items, you open/run the program from PlayOn; open PlayOn, run Windows program. If you just run the program normally, it won't work.
