On Christmas Eve I received the wonderful news that I have gestational diabetes. I had to meet with the nutritionist, learn how to use my lovely blood sugar meter and find out what I can and cannot eat and how much of certain foods I can eat. Let's just say not the greatest Christmas present ever received. So it has become a low carb diet, well to be truthful a no carb diet until I see my doctor tomorrow as my blood sugars have been WAY too high. Let me tell you it is not the easiest thing in the world to live on a low/no carb diet, specially for someone that loves pastas and breads. I am only allowed 30 to 60 grams of carbs per meal. So lets say I want a hamburger and fries, well the bun would be 30 grams in itself and 15 crinkle cut fries is approximately 30. If I want pizza I am only allowed 1/8th.
Going out to dinner poses issues in itself as not every menu lists the carb count so it becomes a fun guessing game.
I know that with gestational diabetes it is 95% guaranteed that it will go away after the baby is born but with my luck I'll be in the 5% that it doesn't and it will be poking fingers and extreme carb counting for the rest of my life. As of right now, yes it is a pain in the ass but I have to do it for the health of my daughter. It really sucks though!!!
